Gold Krugerrand History

By Ben Harmon

The One Ounce Gold Krugerrand history begins not on July 3rd, 1967 when it was first struck- not even in planning and strategy meetings held by the Chamber of Mines of South Africa (established in 1889 as a voluntary private sector organization to represent the interests of mining employers) who were its architects.

The Krugerrand history begins in the hills of Witwatersrand, South Africa. The "ridge of white waters" is a series of east/west running ridges that are over 60 miles in length. In 1884 gold was discovered, and the mining camp at Johannesburg has since grown into a thriving metropolis. At the time, Paul Kruger was president of the Transvaal. In his memoirs he noted that General Joubert correctly predicted the gold discovery will "cause our land to be soaked in blood." The gold discovery led to a huge influx of foreigners looking to make their fortune in gold. Eventually the high number of foreigners and concern for their rights led to conflict. The conflict was multifaceted, with some underlying motivation for the British empire to control this valuable commodity.

The spark that set off the powder keg of the second Boer war came in 1899, when the British demanded equal rights for all the foreign miners. Paul Kruger, concerned about keeping the Transvaal independent, fired back an ultimatum of his own. All British to be out within forty-eight hours. Needless to say neither side backed down, and a war raged for three years. The British eventually prevailed in 1902, and the Transvaal was absorbed- however Boers managed to salvage some conditions so it was not a total rout.

Politics settled, the march of the Gold Krugerrand carried on. A Krugerrand would be nothing without that heart of precious metal- refined gold bullion. In 1920 the Transvaal Chamber of Mines needed a consolidated refinery to handle all the gold in South Africa. The Rand Refinery was created to meet this need, and has been in continuous operation every since.

The One Ounce Krugerrand takes its name from a combination of Paul Kruger's surname, and the Rand, which is the currency of South Africa (the Rand was taken from Witwatersrand). The obverse of the 1 oz Krugerrand has a portrait of Paul Kruger, designed by Otto Schultz. Coert Steynberg designed the reverse, which is a Springbok antelope, a national symbol of South Africa.

With Executive Order 6102 and the Trading with the Enemy Act of 1917, United States citizens were effectively barred from owning gold bullion. In 1967 the Chamber of Mines of South Africa had a clever plan for their fledgling 1 oz Gold Krugerrand. By declaring the coin legal tender of South Africa, it was classified as "foreign coin", and US citizens could buy it. They also had another trick up their sleeve, instead of putting a value on it- they put the weight of the gold bullion on the coin. This allowed a quick and easy method to trade gold bullion without the need to melt and assay its gold content. This also tied the value of the Krugerrand directly to the underlying gold value. It's interesting to note that Krugerrands are not 24 carat gold- they are alloyed with copper which gives them their dark golden color and adds strength. Rest assured however, that they do contain one full ounce of gold bullion. Until apartheid was abolished in the middle of the 1990s, it was still illegal to import Krugers in western countries. In spite of this the Kruger was still a commercial success. Forty-six million ounces later, it is remains the world's most popular bullion investment coin. The One Ounce Gold Krugerrand history leads from the rolling hills to the highest political offices, and beyond. - 23212

Follow Gold in Forex Trading

By Ahmad Hassam

Gold has always been considered as the ultimate global currency. Before 1973, US Dollar used to be pegged to gold. But with the collapse of the Bretton Woods System that year, US Dollar was unpegged from gold and become a freely floating currency. Free floating means the value of the currency is determined by the economic fundamentals of supply and demand.

Now US Dollar is only backed by the full faith and credit of the US Government. In times of financial crisis like the present when the global economy is in recession, many investors try to take refuge in gold as the ultimate safe haven.

Among the different currencies, the Australian Dollar (AUD) is known for its strong correlation with gold prices. Most of this correlation is due to amount of gold that Australia produces and exports. On the other hand, US Dollar has an inverse relationship with gold prices. When gold prices rise, US Dollar falls in value. This causes the currency pair AUD/USD to appreciate in value.

The opposite is also true. As the US Dollar gains value, gold usually loses value. So when gold prices are rising, we can execute long trades on AUD/USD. Likewise, when gold falls in value, we can sell short AUD/USD. This relationship provides us with a method to take advantage of the fundamental factors in forex markets. It may be due to the fact that gold is considered to be the ultimate safe haven by investors in times of financial crisis.

How do you follow gold in currency trading? We now know that AUD/USD pair reacts strongly to gold prices. So we will trade AUD/USD based on following gold. Entering a trade to follow gold is a three step process. Use RSI (Relative Strength Index) as the technical indicator to trigger the trade. If you have read the previous article on following oil in currency trading, we had used the CCI (Commodity Channel Index) to trade USD/CAD pair.

When both gold and oil are commodities, why dont we use CCI for gold as well? Why is that we are using RSI now? CCI gives a quicker signal. This is good for relatively less volatile pairs like USD/CAD. Whereas RSI gives slower signals, this is ideal for more volatile pairs like AUD/USD. It all depends on how quickly the two indicators react to volatility.

Use a moving average to confirm if gold is in an uptrend or a downtrend. Use the seven periods RSI on AUD/USD chart! Watch when it enters one of its reversal zones, then move back out of the reversal zone in the same direction as the gold is trending.

You need to enter a long trade on AUD/USD if the gold prices are rising with the RSI crossing back above the 30 line. On the other hand, you need to enter a short trade on AUD/USD pair if the gold prices are declining with the RSI crossing below the 70 line.

You should set a limit order of 200 pips. You should also put a stop loss order of 50 pips for the trade. This risk to reward ratio is good and is (=50/200). The chances are you are going to make $2000 profit (200 pips is equal to $2000 on a standard lot) if the trade goes as you had anticipated. And if the trade does not go in your favor you should be prepared for a $500 loss (500 pips equal $500 on a standard lot). It is not uncommon to have a trade go against you. Only to find yourself right back in trade that goes your way after sometime. - 23212

Short-Term Trading Opportunity With The Inside Bar

By Chris Blanchet

When it comes to learning technical analysis, a lot of investors will consider the "big picture" patterns and make short-term trades based on such indicators or patterns. The problem, however, is that bigger picture readings are often long-term in nature. So, let's take a look at a short-term pattern.

One of short-term patterns that investors seek is a two-bar pattern known as the inside bar. This pattern reflects a short-term change in investor sentiment, so that if a pattern has been driven downward, the possibility is that the short-term prices will turn around and head the other way.

Spotting an Inside Bar

For investors who are learning technical analysis, identifying the inside bar might be a little more difficult. It involves a taller bar one day, followed a smaller bar the next. The smaller bar consists of a trading range within the preceding day's taller bar.

Find Supporting Data

When it comes to using the inside bar to commit to a trade, investors should seek additional confirmation through additional analysis. This step is often overlooked when investors start learning technical analysis. Other analysis includes fundamental data for the security, sector and market, as well as technical data such as support and resistance levels and momentum.

When it comes to analyzing the inside bar pattern, investors will achieve better trading results from this pattern when the inbound trend is steeper. Additionally, investors will want the first bar to be longer, which suggests the inbound momentum has climaxed. As for the second bar, the narrower the better as this indicates that the reversal will be more dramatic.

And lastly, the volume level should be lower for the second bar than for the first, as this hints at a better balance.

For investors learning technical analysis, please remember that no single indicator should be used in isolation. Confirmation is highly recommended from other tools. For investors who would prefer a hands-off approach, there are trading software programs that will simply make buy or sell calls. - 23212

Find Out How You Can Make Terrific Money With Penny Stocks

By Grant Dougan

One of my favorite investment types are penny stocks. Some individuals don't consider these types of investments since they assume they are too risky. In reality, there's tremendous opportunity to make cash with these shares once you know what to look for.

Any share under two bucks is what I view as a penny stock. When I consider shares to purchase, I look for a business that is new and growing. Some shares of well established companies are inexpensive because of difficulties that the company has had. I will always find companies that are up and coming instead of businesses whose stock is inexpensive based on struggles the business has faced. By zoning in on these organizations I can set myself for a huge payday in the future when the company starts to enjoy some success..

So how do you find the companies to purchase? Naturally, this is the big question!

Studying the industry that the company is in is a crucial first step. Is the competition in the industry too large for a new entrant? This is a top-down analysis of the industry to ensure that the organization is involved in an area that gives them the chance to be a success.

Next, of course you want to examine the company itself. I always like to find a company that differentiates themselves from the competition in some manner. Possibly they make a special product or service, or maybe they are different because they have less expensive prices. If the business provides something that isn't exactly like what all the other competitors offer then the company is a good deal more likely to generate additional sales.

Take a look at the financial statements of the organization to look for anything that seems to stands out, but do not automatically be concerned if they aren't returning positive net income at the time. Many up and coming businesses don't make positive income for the years at the start. Just ensure that there are funds available to the organization. Whether the organization has cash available through a line of credit or money on hand, the company must have cash so they can invest money in their business and build in the future.

It's also a wise idea to search for a company that maintains good communications with shareholders. I want to be able to see a website where the company issues company news in order for me to have a means to stay up to date on company updates.

When you start exploring penny stocks and buying some stocks, you can end up earning some great gains. By knowing how you can find\locate a strong penny stock, you can earn some unbelievable money. - 23212
